About this course
AI and You Grades 9 to 12 is a 12-week AI literacy elective for high schoolers. Comet, Wren and Nova join a school panel reviewing SH-1, a proposed AI study helper. Students train and run a tiny next-word model by hand, measure a model on a test set, and find where it is biased or confidently wrong. They map privacy, safety and security risks such as prompt injection and data poisoning, weigh synthetic media and environmental costs, and decide where humans must stay in charge. Each Friday meets the people who build, test and govern AI. The course ends with a paper model card, a risk register and a go-or-no-go recommendation. It practices CSTA Level 3A and 3B standards. No student ever uses a real AI tool in the course. 100% free, start to finish.
Kids will
- Explain how a model is trained and how a generative model predicts the next word
- Measure a model on a test set and read its errors
- Find harmful bias and explain why fairness is hard to measure
- Name privacy, safety and security risks such as prompt injection and data poisoning
- Weigh synthetic media, environmental cost and supply chain questions
- Decide where humans stay in charge and write a model card and risk review
The 12 weeks
-
Week 1
What Is SH-1, Really?
An AI study helper arrives, and the crew asks what kind of system it is
-
Week 2
The Lifecycle and Its People
Who designs, builds, deploys, runs and checks SH-1, and how they manage risk
-
Week 3
How Models Learn
The crew trains Tiny Text by hand to see how training data becomes predictions
-
