About this course
Ratios and Data Grades 6 to 8 is a 12-week middle-school math course that uses only things a family already has: two colors of counters, paper strips, masking tape, a tape measure, a kitchen timer, a paper plate and a paper clip. The crew is planning a Field Day of games for the younger kids on their street, and every week's math does a job for it. Students mix paint and lemonade in ratios, time runs to find speed as a unit rate, count sign-ups as percents, divide fractions to share supplies, measure the course in decimals, read temperatures below zero and work with negative numbers on a number line, graph proportional relationships and spot the straight line through the origin, survey the neighborhood and display the answers in dot plots, histograms and box plots, summarize data with mean, median and spread, and build a fair spinner game with probability. Every answer is computed, every question is checked, and the course ends with a Data Fair the student runs for the family. Short daily lessons, a hands-on Numbers Lab each week and a Saturday Data Day. 100% free, start to finish.
Kids will
- Use ratio and rate language, equivalent-ratio tables, tape diagrams and double number lines to solve ratio, unit-rate and percent problems
- Divide fractions by fractions, compute with multi-digit decimals, and find greatest common factors and least common multiples
- Place positive and negative numbers on the number line and the coordinate plane, order them, and add, subtract, multiply and divide them
- Recognize proportional relationships in tables, graphs and equations and find the constant of proportionality
- Pose a statistical question, display data in dot plots, histograms and box plots, and summarize it with measures of center and spread
- Describe probability as a number from 0 to 1, build a probability model for a spinner and compare it with observed results
