About this course
Bike Shop Grades 3 to 5 is a 12-week course on how a bicycle works and how to keep one safe, for third to fifth grade. Rocket, Raven and Nova explore pushes and pulls, friction, tires and air, gears and the chain, brakes, helmet fit, reflectors and fixing a flat, ending with a design-a-better-bike challenge. A grown-up handles every tool, and no bike is needed to take part. Every week is free.
Kids will
- Name the main parts of a bicycle and the job each one does
- Explain how balanced and unbalanced forces start, stop and turn a bike
- Describe how friction helps tires grip and brakes slow a wheel
- Use measurements to find and predict patterns of motion
- Check a bike's air, brakes and chain before a ride, with a grown-up
- Design, test and improve a solution to a real bike problem
